Wooster is the county seat and the largest city in Wayne County, Ohio. It's considered a micropolitan due to its population of about 26,000 people, but don't let its small town status fool you! Wooster is anything but sleepy. The area has robust industry, education, and agriculture.
The College of Wooster is one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the Midwest and is nationally recognized for its undergraduate mentoring, supportive faculty, and independent studies. Wooster is also home to two subsidiaries of Ohio State University: the Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI) and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC). These institutes, along with the prominence of 4-H and the annual Wayne County Fair, have helped maintain the Wooster area's long history as an agricultural hub. Wayne County is the #1 dairy producing county in Ohio and the state's third largest agricultural economy.
Another unique feature of Wooster is the city's musical endeavors. The Ohio Light Opera was founded at the College of Wooster in 1979. It is the only professional company in the United States that's devoted entirely to opera. Wooster also has several performing ensembles including the Wooster Symphony Orchestra which is Ohio's second-oldest orchestra in continuous performance.
If you're looking for outdoor escapades beyond the farm fields, Wooster has plenty of that, too! Secrest Arboretum is located on the OARDC campus and is open daily at no cost to visitors. It contains over 2,000 plant species and an impressive collection of Dawn Redwoods, the sole remaining species of the Metasequoia genus.
Wooster Memorial Park is another top choice for outdoor fun. It has over 420 acres and 11.6 miles of hiking trails. If you're looking for something a little more fast paced, Vultures Knob Mountain Bike Trail offers over 7 miles for riding and it's Ohio's oldest privately owned, open to the public mountain bike system.
The area also has a lively downtown with fantastic dining, shops, and entertainment. A section of downtown has DORA (designated outdoor refreshment area) with 17 participating businesses. The Wooster DORA helps to promote downtown restaurants, retail, and utilization of public space.
